Sonic Mania was released in August 2017 and became the highest-rated Sonic game in fifteen years. The team used Whitehead's Retro Engine and aimed for a graphical quality between Genesis and Sega Saturn games. Art, level design, audio, and additional programming was provided by independent studios PagodaWest Games and Headcannon. Development began after lead developer, director and programmer Christian "Taxman" Whitehead, who was previously contracted by Sega to develop enhanced mobile ports of Genesis Sonic games, presented a playable prototype to Sonic Team producer Takashi Iizuka. The development team was composed of members known for their work in the Sonic fangame and ROM hacking community. The story follows Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as they venture to defeat their nemesis Doctor Eggman and his robotic henchmen, the Hard-Boiled Heavies.
It takes place over 12 levels, including several redesigned from past games. While Amy herself does not make an appearance in Sonic Mania, and neither in Sonic Mania Plus, she has a cameo during the Metallic Madness Zone Act 2 boss fight, where Dr. Amy then sweetly gives Sonic a flower before taking off. While Amy was pleased by the sight, Sonic, who was watching nearby, was dumbfounded. Eventually, Eggman opened the door and took Metal Sonic inside. Before hiding behind some rocks though, she remembered to give Metal Sonic a flower and turn towards the front door. There, she place Metal Sonic at the front door and made him presentable with a bow before ringing Eggman's doorbell. Noticing the heavy snow, Amy decided that she could not leave Metal Sonic and got him back to Eggman's lair after dragging him through Mushroom Hill Zone and IceCap Zone. A Flicky then popped out of Metal Sonic and kicked him, causing him to fall down again. Seeing that Metal Sonic was still unresponsive though, Amy helped Metal Sonic on his feet. As a broken tree then began falling down on Metal Sonic, Amy swiftly saved the robot, only to get scared of him and start pounding him with her hammer when he looked at her. Amy was startled at first, but Metal Sonic, being in a state of disrepair, made no attempt to hurt her. Eggman.ĭuring winter, Amy was taking a stroll on Angel Island when she tripped over a snow-covered Metal Sonic.
